Hojicha is a roasted green tea which originated by tea farmers when trying to roast the lesser grade teas or tea plant roots to bring out better qualities. This led to the creation of a nutty, sweet, and smoky aroma of tea which made it a very popular widely consumed drink in Japan.
Hojicha can be processed from either the Kukicha (green tea roots) or Bancha (lower grade sencha). However, it is also occasionally processed using Sencha as how Sencha Dojo's Hojicha is made. Using premium Sencha to make Hojicha gives better overall quality of the tea with the added features of roasted tea.
Hojicha is low in caffeine which is a good option to consume during any time of the day and can be consumed by children as well due to the low caffeine content. Hojicha can be enjoyed hot or cold and is usually consumed after meals in Japan.
