Genmaicha is a blend of Japanese green tea and roasted rice. The word genmaicha literally translates to brown rice tea. The green tea used in the mix is usually third or fourth flush tea (bancha) mixed with roasted rice. Genmaicha was initially consumed by humbler individuals in difficult times due to it acting as a stomach filler. However, the popularity increased over time and it is now enjoyed all over Japan and the world due to the unique blend producing a mildly sweet and nutty flavor, with it known to have a popcorn taste.
Premium genmaicha is a blend of roasted brown rice and top quality premium sencha instead of the standard grade green tea used in the mix. The blend gives you notes of popcorn and has a low caffeine content suitable for evening tea.
